Achim: a three-minute morning transcription

A short app, so the rules are short too.

1. What this is

Transcription by hand is copying a text word for word, a practice long used to settle the mind or absorb writing into the body.

This screen shows one short sentence each day, drawn from the original Chinese text of the Analects and the Tao Te Ching, and what you copy by hand is a short Korean rendering of its meaning that we wrote ourselves.

2. The basic rules

One sentence appears each day, chosen by date, so anyone who opens the app on the same day sees the same sentence.

Copying the sentence exactly into the input box raises your progress, and finishing it shows a completion screen and a share card.

3. The details of this app

Twelve sentences live in src/data/phrases.ts, grouped into four themes a commuter actually feels: urgency, blaming others, regret after a mistake, and morning framing. Future additions stay within these same themes.

What you type is compared only inside your browser and never sent to a server, and your progress is calculated on screen only.

The 9:16 share card made after you finish is also drawn inside your browser, and it carries only today's sentence and its meaning.

There is no streak and no notification. Missing a day changes nothing about the next day's sentence.

4. Sources and copyright

The Chinese originals are roughly 2,500 years old and carry no copyright.

The Korean gloss is our own short rendering of the meaning, not a copy of any publisher's translation.

Specific Korean translations of other scriptures were left out of this seed pending copyright review (see docs/copyright-todo.md).

5. When progress stalls

Progress only climbs as far as the characters match, in order, from the very start. One different character part-way through stops it from climbing further, even if everything after that is typed correctly.

Commas, periods, and spacing count too. Type them exactly as shown to move past that point, since getting the meaning right is not enough if a character differs.

If you can't find where it stalled, clear the box and start again from the beginning. Today's sentence and how progress is measured stay the same no matter how many times you retype it.

6. Frequently asked

Why is this different from a meditation app or a Bible app. This app asks for no sitting time and no particular faith; one short hand motion during your commute is enough.

Why is there no streak. We did not want to add the pressure of a daily obligation, so missing a day is fine and the next day's sentence is simply waiting.
